The Opportunity

You will maintain regular contact with a designated client or clients. This is typically one to one contact with the client in her/his home or in a community space and regular contact via telephone and/or e-mail. You will develop activities with the client that support her/his specific needs and interests. This could include shopping, outings, cooking, going to the cinema/cafes if at the clients expense. We do not expect volunteers to help with domestic chores. You may also be involved in communicating with the client s family, partner and professionals involved with their care as applicable, in conjunction with and subject to, the Pastoral Coordinators' agreement.

The Organisation

The Cara Trust has been providing services for people with HIV across London since 1988. All services are provided free of charge. As well as support groups, services include respite retreats, advocacy, advice and referrals, complementary therapies, counselling, financial support, spiritual support events and information services.

We see ourselves as a community of friendship and try to ensure that this ethos informs everything that we do. Accordingly, Cara is a very supportive place to volunteer.

Skills / Qualifications

This role requires an enhanced CRB disclosure for work with vulnerable adults.

Excellent awareness of issues related to living with HIV.

Clear understanding of appropriate boundaries and a willingness to work within them; ability to implement high standards of confidentiality.

Good communication skills. Fluent English. Other languages would be desirable.

Non-judgemental. Confident and mature outlook on life.

Stability; Ability to manage own emotions and those of others within boundaries.

Honesty, reliability, emotional resilience, persistence and commitment.
