Association Visitor

Motor Neurone Disease Association


The Opportunity

Association Visitors act as the main contact for people living with MND (this includes the person with MND, their family and carer) on behalf of the Association. They keep in regular contact offering confidential emotional support and accurate information to enable people with MND to make informed choices.
Key tasks:
> To make and maintain contact regularly by phone, email or face to face visits with people living with Motor Neurone Disease
> Explain the support and services the Association can offer.
> Explain the benefits of becoming a member.
> Discuss their needs and wishes regarding support from the Association.
> Enable them to identify problems as they arise and explore how these might be managed, outlining the sorts of options available and how to access them.
> Develop and maintain relationships with your local Branch or Group.
> Advocate on behalf of people with living with MND.
> Make accurate and relevant records in accordance with the MND Associations guidelines and local protocols.
> Attend support and supervision meetings and other development events.

Training courses are scheduled for:
Course 1) 8th June, 23rd& 24th June, 11th August 2011
Course 2) 24th Sept, 8th & 9th October, 19th November 2011
Subsequent dates on application.

Volunteers are asked to commit to 12-18 months volunteering and give a guideline of around 2-4 hrs per week.

The Organisation

Our mission is to fund and promote research to bring about an end to MND. Until then we will do all that we can to enable everyone with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We will also do all that we can to support the families and carers of people with MND.
Activities: The Association funds and promotes research to understand what causes MND, how to diagnose it and, most importantly, how to effectively treat it so that it no longer devastates lives.

We also campaign nationally and locally for better care for all people with MND, and provide support and advice to help people with the disease and those who care for them to achieve the highest quality of life possible.

Skills / Qualifications

Skills and qualities: You will be able to:
> Commit a minimum of 2 - 4 hours per week to include supporting people with MND, You will understand the need for and be willing to participate in support and supervision meetings and development opportunities and use them appropriately.
> Have good listening and communication skills and the ability to liaise with colleagues.
> Be able to work as part of a team and within the boundaries of the role, have the ability to develop networks, and liaise with health and social care professionals.
> Be able to develop and maintain supportive relationships with people with MND and their carers whilst respecting different lifestyles and ways of managing problems in a non judgemental way.
> Prepared to increase your knowledge of Motor Neurone Disease, its effects, and the impact it has on individuals, their families and carers.
> Understand the need for confidentiality and carry out the role in accordance with the Associations policy.
be able to recognise situations where you are not able to meet an individuals needs and the need to signpost to an alternative more appropriate organisation, or when unsure about what action to take be prepared to seek support from an experienced Visitor or relevant member of staff.
