Trustee
The Advocacy Project
The Opportunity
Do you have the skills to act as a trustee for The Advocacy Project?
They are looking for trustees to help them to maintain and develop the impetus that they have already created. In particular they are looking for experience in public relations and marketing, finance, fundraising or social care. Your assistance will make a real difference to the lives of those whom the Project supports, and you will develop your own knowledge and experience of disability issues along the way.
The trustees meet about 6 times a year in the evenings, and are involved in a further 2 strategy/development meetings each year.
In addition there is scope for you to get involved in work directly with people with learning disabilities and other ad hoc work if you wish but the trustee appointment is not dependent on this.
The Organisation
The Advocacy Project works to promote the interests of all adults with a learning disability living in the London boroughs of Westminster, Camden and Kensington & Chelsea. Advocacy means taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need.
Through advocacy the Project challenges inequality and gives their clients a voice, supporting them to ask for and obtain services which enable them to take their place in society in terms of finance, employment, health services, living arrangements and participation in local affairs. In general the Project assists people to obtain access to their full rights and privileges as citizens.
This advocacy is provided through both Professional Advocacy (assistance on a one to one basis) and Self Advocacy (user-led groups of clients who support each other within the group to understand, defend and promote their rights).
