The Opportunity
Becoming a befriender is a very rewarding experience for both volunteers and the tenants they befriend. Volunteers visit tenants of the Association who have become isolated for a range of different reasons such as old age, ill health, disability or language barriers and subsequently are in need of support. Tenants are visited on a weekly or fortnightly basis for a minimum of two hours and are offered emotional support and practical help e.g. Help with correspondence and form-filling, budgeting skills, accompanying on appointments in the local community, or just to chat etc.
You will also be involved in listening and empathizing with the tenant's concerns and anxieties. Regular support and supervision is provided by the volunteer co-ordinator and training is ongoing.
A minimum of six months commitment is required.
The Organisation
Acton Housing association's volunteer Service offers a wide range of opportunities including; befriending, Resettlement Volunteer Scheme, `Brushstrokes'(painting & decorating), Tasks Group, Christmas Hampers and the Translation drop-in Service.
Skills / Qualifications
We do not specify any qualification or prior experience. we welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experience.
However, this is a guide for the kind of skills we are looking for:
Ability to work well in one-to-one situations.
The ability to empathise.
Must be reliable.
Good communication skills.
Good listening skills.
An awareness of the social difficulties faced by those who are isolated.
Basic knowledge of welfare services.
Able to be supportive whilst encouraging independence and empowerment.
Getting There
Closest tube station is Ealing Broadway (the district line). Take the 207 bus(which travels on Uxbridge Road) towards Uxbridge or Hayes Bypass. Our office is directly opposite Ealing Fire Station. 113 Uxbridge Road.
