How we helped Meta

How we helped Meta

Meta dropped into the Volunteer Centre in May and started volunteering at Lancaster Road Activity Project a fortnight later. The Lancaster Road Project runs a drop-in day centre for people who are homeless in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Service users can get involved in many creative activities at the centre, Meta is responsible for running the weekly drama workshops.

Before Meta volunteered at Lancaster Road Activities Project, she spent four months volunteering in India where she helped children on the streets. When she returned from India she felt like something was missing from her life so she came to the Volunteer Centre to find something she could get stuck into.

“I started Volunteering because I needed something different, other than a job, in my life. I get a sense of fulfilment and contributing to society from Volunteering here... Lancaster Road Activity Project is very special, I’ve met lots of people and it feels like a family here.”

Meta says that she has improved herself as a person through being exposed to all kinds of different people, something, she claims, would not have happened if she hadn’t taken the opportunity to volunteer.

Because of her volunteering experience, Meta says, “Something changed in my life. Here I can be myself and I am very happy when I speak to people.”

About the Lancaster Road Activity Project

The Lancaster Road Activity Project is open to service users on Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The project’s service users are homeless people, they are often suffering from mental health issues and other issues related to drug and alcohol misuse and lead very chaotic lives. The centre provides a welcome break from the streets and a chance to get involved in various therapeutic activities aimed at helping them get their lives back on track. Volunteers are involved in all activities including taking music workshops, cooking, befriending, teaching IT and doing sports with service users.  They are always looking for volunteers so please contact us if you are interested in helping out.
