Volunteer into work
St. Cuthbert's is an open door, drop-in centre for all vulnerable people in Earl's Court and the surrounding areas. They have a variety of activities and spaces where clients can chill out and socialise. They also work with specialised teams in the borough and are able to refer clients with complex needs to the right services.
"We've been working with the Volunteer Centre for a very long time. We have 12 volunteers on our books, most come in for about 1 or 2 days, apart from the New Deal volunteers who are in everyday. We are a small independent charity who could not survive without the hard work of our volunteers. There is no differentiation between volunteers and staff; everybody does everything.
Our partnership with the New Deal Team in the Volunteer Centre is incredible. I only have to ring and speak to Sharon or Ola and they will try and find me a suitable volunteer. They've been very helpful to us over the years. In fact, we have two full-time members of staff who have come through the New Opportunities Project.
Our Chef, Naseem, came through the New Deal project to volunteer in our kitchen. It was obvious from the start that she was a skilled chef. Then our current chef left and Naseem was very happy to step into the role. This was fantastic for us as the clients love her food.
Christina, our full-time support worker came through the New Opportunities team at the VC. She was volunteering with us, when the job that was advertised and she went for it. She's been working in the role for over a year and she loves it.
Volunteers who work with us here at St. Cuthbert’s learn a range of valuable skills. Some even get jobs with us! Volunteers learn to work with people with very complex support needs; people with mental health issues and people with substance misuse problems. It truly is a great learning curve for anyone who is interested in this line of work. We also excel at team work, so this is a great place for learning team-building skills."
