Philomena Murphy

Resettlement Scheme Officer

I came to the Volunteer Centre in March 2008 as a volunteer on the New Deal. As a volunteer I covered all reception duties as well as taking up any administrative work that the team could throw at me!

I received so much help and support from staff and volunteers that within weeks my confidence had grown and I was able to add more knowledge and hands-on experience to my CV.

In October 2008 I took on the new role of Resettlement Officer. This involves assisting prisoners in the process of resettlement into working life. I attend prisons to have one-to-one meetings with the prisoner to discuss previous work experience and qualifications in order to find volunteer opportunities that are suitable for them.

In my spare time I do volunteer work as an Independent Legal Advisor. As a Legal Advisor I deal with housing issues, civil law, criminal law and court procedures. I have spent nine years reading law and helping people in the community.

What I love about the Volunteer Centre is being able to help people in the community and in the process I get to work with a realy great team.
