Hi. I am Martin and came into the Volunteer Centre while on the New Deal scheme in March 2006 to get some work experience, doing 2 days a week; Monday and Wednesdays.
It was one of the best things that could have happened to me at the time as I had had a career break due to becoming a full-time carer looking after my ageing mother who had walking difficulties. It did not take long to get back into my stride and performing administration duties, as I used to work for British Telecom as a customer service officer.
My role in the centre is registering new volunteers on a local database by gathering information from postal and electronic registration forms; sending new volunteers information about possible volunteering opportunities by post and email; and general office duties such as printing, photo-coping, filing, faxing and answering inquiry calls.
I like doing this work as I am very happy working on data bases and using a computer. And I like working with a great team at the centre as well. But the most important thing I get out doing volunteer work is that now a gap on my CV has been filled.
As for my hobbies and interests, I love watching live football games on television and supporting my local side which is QPR, and I like to play golf when I can. I have done lots of travel in my time and one trip I had took me right around the world. I also like visiting my local pub for a couple of pints most nights.
